For years , astronomers have been search ( pointlessly ? ) for ‘ Planet X ‘ , a rumored solid ground - size major planet said to subsist in the outer reach of the Solar System ( and which is going to clash with Earth and kill us all , if you listen to the truthers ) .
NPRhas taken a look at the search for ‘ Planet go ’ , and the tool that should try or disprove its existence one way or another : the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope ( LSST ) , a gigantic superstar - searching array that ’s just bug out mental synthesis in Cerro Pachon , Chile .
Although some astronomer ruled out Planet X ’s beingness after aNASA sketch last yearfound a big ‘ ol bundle of nothing , NPR talked to those who remain close to the cause . It ’s gripping to see how much public debate there is over the world of something so self-aggrandising , so close ( by space terms , at least ) . Either way , when the LSST comes online in 2022 , we should have a shot at answer this one way or another : it ’s rocking the Earth ’s largest digital camera . [ NPR ]
