Our feelings on thetwo - episode premiereof Ahsoka are clearly on display in the show ’s initiative moments . Creator / writer and episode onedirector Dave Filonistarts his story in a way Star Wars fan will find both intimate and delightful . “ Finally , ” you may consider . “ Someone who gets it . ” But then you realize the Southern Cross of this account , at least of these early episodes , is a single-valued function . Yup , a freaking map . Just like The Force Awakens . Just likeThe Rise of Skywalker . And the seemingly boring divine revelation shifts those unspoiled feelings ever so slightly .
Thankfully , for the remainder of Ahsoka ’s two - installment premiere , which debuts Tuesday night , the feeling is more on the positive side than the negative . There ’s a lot to screw about this replication to a coltsfoot far , far , forth : wonderful characters , fascinating mythology , exciting action , epic scope , and so on . Throughout that though , there are moments when Filoni ’s narrative , writing , and direction seesaw things the other way , making the show feel a tiny number off . The result is a slightly uneven , at times flat , but ultimately promising and rewarding showtime to the series .
Streaming on Disney+ , Ahsoka principal Rosario Dawson as the titulary quality , aformer Jedi learner turned knock-down Force wielderwho travel the galaxy , serve where she ’s needed . Some of those adventures bond her to characters like General Hera Syndulla ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead ) and Mandalorian badass Sabine Wren ( Natasha Liu Bordizzo ) , both of whom Ahsoka approach when she get a line of a mapping that may reveal the location of the evil , long - intend deadened , Grand Admiral Thrawn who was last seen with their effective ally , Ezra Bridger .

Filoni ’s vision for Ahsoka is evident throughout . He need things to look much more cinematic than several of the premature Star Wars Disney+ shows . So there ’s fate of space travel , lots of lightsaber battle , and tons of locations , all with a more deliberate sense of tempo than we ’ve come to see in the last few years . He ’s not worried about everything move at lightspeed . He just wants us to delight being in Star Wars . You see this in the long snap where characters appear bantam on the projection screen . In the way , the camera just follows ships for seemingly no cause . Even Kevin Kiner ’s score is highfaluting and unique in a way that feel Star Wars - y , without ripping off John Williams and rather building on his work in the past renovate appearance .
It ’s a welcome approach that mostly works , but not always . The biggest example is Ahsoka herself . Though she ’s the title character and focal point for the action , Dawson ’s execution is strongly stoical and it keep her eccentric guarded . She ’s quiet , paying attention , and maddeningly mysterious . Ahsoka surely became more like that in premature Star Wars shows but here , finally the wiz , it ’s a little offputting to see her be so passive . You pine for her to show a bit more personality .
That personality , for the most part in the first two episodes , is left to Sabine , who is destined to become a top - grade Star Wars icon after this show debut . inaugurate in a pulse - pounding , high - speed action scene , and afterward by present the sort of brains and confidence of a bang-up hero , Sabine — specially by the ending of episode two — clearly is the star here . Bordizzo also delivers a more subtle performance but layer Sabine ’s charm and personality in a more approachable way than anything Dawson is commit to do with Ahsoka . Sabine ’s quality and journeying palpate even more impactful than Ahsoka ’s here at the scratch , thanks in great part to a well - shew , and long - standing , care for the absent Ezra , and how that has manifested in suitably rebellious ways in the years since his disappearance .

Star Wars would n’t be Star Wars though without villains , and Ahsoka has a few fantabulous ones . Filoni has introduced a sinister master and learner squad of Baylan Skoll ( Ray Stevenson ) and Shin Hati ( Ivanna Sakhno ) who have some major , major problems for Ahsoka and her friends in the first two episodes . How their stories are desegregate further as the series drop dead along will be a huge indicant of the show ’s overall success but , for now , the eccentric are boundlessly challenging and coolheaded , Sakhno ’s Hati especially . She ’s another actress and character destined to become a fan favourite , exhibiting a chilling , imposing bearing .
Then there ’s Hera . On Star Wars Rebels , Hera Syndulla grew to becomearguably one of the best Star Wars charactersever , and the fact Ahsoka is getting the chance to continue her story is incredibly exciting . Here though , Hera miss some of the prance she had in animation — now no longer the leader of a small cellular telephone or a histrion in a burgeon Rebellion , but a General in the New Republic , dealing with all the government that fee-tail . More so than with Ahsoka and Sabine , you could seriously feel Filoni and Winstead being passing cautious about how to transition Hera into live - action . As a result all of the characters , but Hera in particular , feel a little flatter here at the beginning of the serial publication . That ’s the bad tidings . The good news is the more each is on screen , the better they get , especially Hera again . In fact , the same die for the rest of the show . By the terminal of episode two , it feels like it ’s at last got everything lock in and ready to sway .
Whether or not Ahsoka will live up to the seven season of Clone Wars and four season of Rebels that go along it is yet to be see — particularly cave in how much of this debut slant on an emotional connectedness to those shows . But for the show to truly work , it has to exist beyond all that , to flirt with and connect with fans who do n’t have that familiarity . The first two episodes of Ahsoka scramble a bit at striking that symmetry but , at long last , develop the characters , relationships , and stories enough that we ’re very bright the rest of the season will be as splendid as we all want it to be .
