fit in to a new report from Mark Gurman , Apple will kill the iPhone ’s physical house button in 2017 . Do n’t get it wrench , this is n’t the iPhone we ’re going to see in afew weeks ; it ’s the iPhone after that . And killing the home button is a very sad estimation .

We ’ve heard the rumor that Apple will beditching the home buttonbefore , but this time the news derive fromBloomberg’sGurman , who has a much good cut record book than most , when it come to Apple word . Gurman report :

Apple is already at work on a major redesign of the iPhone for 2017 that focuses more heavily on the display by removing the Home release , according to a person familiar with the issue .

Dropping the home button would be a huge alteration for Apple . The rest home button , which debut with the original iPhone in 2007 , is absolutely iconic .

I have my dubiousness that Apple would actually get disembarrass of the home button functionality . It ’s just too big a part of iOS . I do trust that Apple could be finally ready to allow the forcible button melt . After all , having it at the bottom of the iPhone claim up a ton of substantial estate that could be considerably used for the screen .

Most other phone Jehovah have proceed to virtual buttons or much smaller home clit for this precise understanding . Apple already has patent for both anall - glassphone ( also rumored for 2017 ) and forTouch ID sensorsthat subsist underneath the phone ’s display . Which is to say , just because the forcible home button is disappearing does n’t mean its functionality would go away too . A virtual home release built into the display could do everything a physical button could do , but without call for up so much space .

And make no misapprehension , the home button does a lot of stuff . Want to call up Siri ? Long pressure on the family button . Want to unlock your phone with Touch ID ? Press the home push ! Apple Pay ? Again , that ’s what the home release is for .

It ’s deserving pointing out that the pleasing click of a physical home base button could be replaced with some form of haptic feedback . Apple is progressively working in haptics ; Force Touch on the Apple Watch and Apple trackpads already employ tactual feedback to make it feel like you are pressing on a forcible button . 3D Touch on the iPhone 6S uses haptics too , although the result amount to more shaking rather than renovate the tactile property of a clitoris press .

Still , I ca n’t help but be distressing about the destruction of a strong-arm home button . The home push is just excellent . There ’s something unbelievably satisfy about tapping on the menage release , and that click just feels undecomposed . It feels correct .

Losing such an iconic part of mod tech to make way for a unspoiled screen is inevitable , however . At least we ’ll have the memories .
