When moving slowly , kangaroos plant their tail on the land in sequence with their front and hind legs . To determine the tail ’s theatrical role in this ‘ pentapedal ’ pace , we measure the forces the tail exerts on the ground and calculate the mechanically skillful ability it generates . We found that the tail assembly is creditworthy for as much propulsive force as the front and hind legs combine . It also generate almost exclusively positive mechanically skillful power , perform as much mass - specific mechanical work as does a human leg during walking at the same speed . kangaroo use their muscular tail to support , propel and power their pentapedal pace just like a leg .
