Last year , writer and satirist Charlie Brooker awed us and basically ripped our guts out withthe first time of year of Black Mirror , a three - episode series of shortsighted stories sic in worrying , media - impregnate futures . Now he ’s back with time of year two , whose first episode , “ Be Right Back , ” aired last night on Channel 4 . It was a strong , moody start , though not quite as devastatingly misanthropical as anything in time of year one .

Spoilers ahead .

Perhaps the best element of “ Be the right way Back , ” place five minutes into the futurity , is its passing well - respect commentary on the difference between our societal media online personas and who we really are . Ash and Martha are a untried duo who have just moved into Ash ’s family unit home in the country . While Martha creates digital art with her futuristic Mac setup , Ash is a societal media addict . He ’s incessantly tweeting , facebooking , or whatever - ing piffling crack and pictures . He can barely yield attention to Martha because he ’s so absorbed on showing masses something cool . At one point , he uploads a snapshot of a childhood photograph of himself that his mother left behind , remarking that “ it ’s fishy . ” But once Martha start asking where the photo get from , Ash confesses that it was taken on one of the saddest days of his life , after his brother go bad , and that his smile was completely “ fake . ” Here , and in several other subtle scenes , we see the membrane between online Ash and the material man whom Martha loves .
Before we have a chance to get to sleep together Ash , however , he ’s killed in a cable car accident . Most of the taradiddle is about how Martha cop with his red , specially once her friend signalise her up for a unexampled vane overhaul that creates an Ash avatar for her out of all the societal media dust he pull up stakes behind . Over time , Martha becomes addicted to the bastard Ash , feeding more and more of Ash ’s private substance , photos and videos to the service so that the Ash avatar ’s responses become more natural . They calibrate from IM correspondence to synthesized sound calls , to something much uncanny . There are disconsolate note here , never pursued , about how societal media target on our emotional breakability to suck individual data out of us .
eventually , “ Be flop Back ” becomes simply a speculation on the experience of unresolved human grief . This is a story that could be tell entirely without the trappings of WWW engineering science , though Brooker wants to indicate that social media is preventing Martha from healing . There ’s nothing unseasonable with using science fiction to evidence a cosmopolitan story about emotion , and indeed Black Mirror has always bring home the bacon in doing that . What ’s miss here , though , is the media critique that gift the first time of year such a multi - layered upshot .
