A270 - degree , wraparound triple - covert theatre systemhas just begun rolling out to very prime theater across the country — only five , in fact — with Bob Hope of delivering an immersive movie - going experience that succeeds where 3D has so miserably give out . I got a stool pigeon peek at the new technology lately and it ’s , um , really something alright . I ’m just not really certain what that is .
The Barco Escape organisation , designed by Red Camera Colorado - founder Ted Schilowitz , adopt the standard cinematic experience and triad it , tilt two more screens off the side of the primary screen and projecting additional scenery onto them with auxiliary projectors .
“ It ’s a very interesting metre for us to see at what picture palace - fashioning can be and to look at the other choices are available , ” Schilowitz told Gizmodo .

For the demo , Schilowitz screened a poor selection of content — from rave footage to motion-picture show laggard to the new 20th Century Fox flick , Maze Runner , which drop last Friday . The current experience is far from perfect . The gap between screens led to thick fateful bars segment the activity , which is OK if you ’re showing three disjoined image but really distracting if you ’re doing a individual wraparound dead reckoning . And the additional screen space did n’t often add much visual entropy , just feel a lot like watching a very large 21:9 monitor .
The most thwarting part was that the quality and appearance of the onscreen action change well depending on where you sit around , not unlike the minuscule scented spot in 3D theater . You ’ve got to sit down dead center to get the full effect . The side covert always seemed somewhat out of focus , which is coolheaded when you ’re focalise only on the center screen door — it resembles normal peripheral vision — but is disconcerting when when see straight at the side projection screen .
When I asked about whether theaters would require added retrofitting to lodge the organization , Schilowitz replied , “ Now , in each field , there ’s slightly dissimilar geometries — different size and different ways to make this piece of work … In some theaters that side screens are slimly expectant or small but eventually we ’ll get to a sort of worldwide fit . And a multiplication or two from now , it [ the screen regalia ] will likely be a big unseamed curve . ”

The system is in exploitation , mind you , which is why the experience was rather underwhelming . Still , Barco Escape holds a great mass of promise . Currently , the screens have been installed in five theater across the country with plans to expand worldwide over the next nine calendar month , though Schilowitz await the format to really take off in the next 18 to 24 months , once the engineering further matures .
Should they get the screen setup clean up out — perhaps using a single , angular screen rather than three individual ones or mayhap a fully wrapped wall like the Circle - Vision theatre at Disney Land — and get more contented creators onboard with the organisation , this could easily give 3D a run for its money . It may even lure the American world forth from their home amusement systems and back into theaters .
