When we last left Ezekiel , he and the soldiers of the Kingdom were getting fritter away to hell by a jumbo gatling artillery located at the top of the Saviors ’ compound , before long after about three solid hr of the king gloat that not a single of his people ’s life would be turn a loss this day . Obviously , Ezekiel was rather unseasonable , but as last night ’s episode evince his Clarence Shepard Day Jr. just aim bad from there .
I really love “ Some Guy , ” I recollect primarily because since it was in the main sharpen just on Ezekiel , it really had time to tell one specific story , while it still functioned as part of the season / cooccurring assault on the Saviors . It was like the still - fantastic “ Clear ” in that esteem , although the story “ Some Guy ” is telling is much , much simpler . And I ’m sure I ’m still grading it on a curve after the annoying , dawdle season six and seven , too . But watching the show basically break in Ezekiel down into his component parts was compelling , even if it was n’t particularly surprising or deep — and it certainly help that it was spatter with moment of badassery from Carol , Daryl , and Rick , too .
essentially , Ezekiel is horror-struck to wake in a pile of corpses of his own hoi polloi and is further horrified to see he ’s the only ( apparent ) survivor . His soldiery have literally been dissipate to pieces by the gatling accelerator , and the show give us a montage of those pieces and torso and so forth . Ezekiel is horror-struck yet again when the corpses that have most of their parts intact start rouse up and trying to exhaust him , especially since he ’s been shot in the leg and ca n’t take the air .
Again , his day gets worse from there . As he ’s about to be eaten , he receive one of four ( ! ) last - second saves that take position over the course of this episode . Unfortunately , it ’s courtesy of a Savior who want to take the King alive to Negan as per didactics ( along with Rick and “ The Widow ” ) . I did n’t capture the Savior ’s name , assuming he devote one beyond “ Negan , ” but he has a short gray mullet and gargantuan glassful , meaning he looks precisely likeJoe Lo Truglio ’s theatrical role in Wet Hot American Summeror an older version of me in 4th grade .
For some reason , this buster knows Ezekiel ’s story , or at least has formulated a very precise hypothesis that he was not a member of some existent secret royal family hiding in America but was a dude who was venture to be a B. B. King , whose authority basically come from the fact he ’d make out to get his manpower on a pet tiger . ( Dude guessing Ezekiel work as a circus ; we know Ezekiel in reality worked at a zoo . Good supposition , dude ! ) It ’s weird that this guy somehow knows enough about the spiel Ezekiel has been using to keep the Kingdom together to call him out on it — he even says “ Take aside the Panthera tigris … and you ’re some meaningless con man in a costume , ” which is very on the nose — but that , match with the fact he take his soldiers mow down , is lounge around King E out tremendously .
Since Dude is squeeze Ezekiel to limp frontwards on his injured peg ( with his cane ) , they ’re moving pretty easy , and all the ex-husband - Kingdom hombre - turn zombie spirit are almost upon them . Just as Dude settle he should just convey Ezekiel ’s headway back , Jerry — vast , loveable , Right Hand of the King Jerry — pops in out of nowhere and bring down Dude in twain with his axe ( last - 2d spare # 2 ) . Jerry leads Ezekiel to the logic gate to the compound , hoping to get at heart , but it ’s chained up , and they ’re surrounded by the zombi of their former kinsmen anyway .
Meanwhile , apparently , Carol was the only person in on the assault that managed to get into the building to sweep it before Hades broke loose . There are only a few Saviors in there , but when Carol spies some of them pack away the hitman and trying to enrapture it down to a truck , she basically goes cash in one’s chips Hard . She shoot down the entire first group of Saviors , but a unexampled group stops her from grabbing the gas pedal . She chases them outside to their truck , and has another firefight with them . I sha n’t put up you with the specific , but Carol does badass thing until she sees Ezekiel and Jerry fighting for their lives , and has to take between save them or have the heavy weapon .
She chooses them ( last - 2d save # 3 ) while two Saviors drive away with the gatling gun … or so Ezekiel worries . But Carol hears the telltale sound of a motorcycle motor , and knows the guns will be sized shortly . Daryl and Rick , having gotten the info that the gas pedal was transferred to this chemical compound from the guy who surrendered ( and then Daryl shot ) last week , have drive like perdition to join the Ezekiel / Carol group , but when they saw the motortruck drive have instantly surmise it must hold the weapon they ’ve been searching for . ( It ’s an super commodious Book of Revelation , but The Walking Dead has asked us to take much , much foresightful leaps before . ) One of the Saviors has the hitman set up in the seam of the truck , Daryl wipes out in his bike , the Saviors ’ truck veering to debar some zombies , Rick blocks the route , Daryl restoration and shoots the dude in the back , Rick jump in the truck , kills the number one wood , it wobble off the route . Bottom - line of credit , Rick is okay and now Alexandria has a gatling gun too ho ho ho . It ’s a playfulness action mechanism scene , if not in particular modern .
As the zombi crowd together around him yet again , Shiva the Panthera tigris bursts upon the scene doing his best Dire Wolf from Game of Thrones impersonation , and treats us to the fourth and net last - 2nd save . Shiva distract the zombies , first by roar and vote out them , and soon as a snack ; the Panthera tigris sacrifice herself so that Carol , Jerry , and a now completely despair Ezekiel can get forth . When they return to the Kingdom — literally the only three survivors of the entire force he lead out that morning — Ezekiel ca n’t face his people . He just limps away .
If you could n’t read between the extremely encompassing line of business of the episode , there ’s yet another pre - assault flashback , where Ezekiel talks to Carol fundamentally about how he went from a meek zookeeper to a king with a tiger for a pet . He operate to the zoo , see Shiva hurt , and then had to decide whether to walk out or jump into a genuine Panthera tigris ’s den to help her out . “ If you ’re demand to be the hero , be the hero , ” he says . It ’s basically been his mantra throughout the post - Revelation of Saint John the Divine , and it led directly to his coronation .
But in the nowadays , Ezekiel has gotten his people killed , been called out on the lie that is his post - revelatory life sentence , and lost the one thing that give acceptance to his Trygve Halvden Lie , Shiva . The Savior dude tot up insult to injury with his uncannily accurate deconstruction of the would - be king , but it ’s really seeing the army corps of all the people that followed him that makes him feel like a fraud , and someone who dead has no business organization make believe to be a leader of any kind . What Ezekiel does n’t take in is something made clear by Jerry in the first place in the episode . As one compass point Jerry calls Ezekiel “ your loftiness , ” and Ezekiel snaps , “ You do n’t need to call me that ! ” Jerry ’s response : “ Yes I do . ”
I assume The walk Dead will be giving this disclosure to Ezekiel soon enough , but what the king does n’t realize is that his performance is n’t just for his benefit . The multitude of the Kingdom need their king much more than he need to be baron . I ’m sure some dimwitted people have bought totally into Ezekiel as consume some providential right to rule , but I imagine the majority have consciously agreed to uphold the conceit at the heart of the Kingdom , which is Ezekiel himself — after all , it ’s not like he has any regal parentage , he just has ( had ) a damn tiger .
Ezekiel chose to bet the part of a leader , but the people who ended up forming the Kingdom wanted — needed — someone to lead them . To them , Ezekiel in reality has been a leader , and sometimes loss leader can make bad determination or do n’t have enough intel or are wildly hubristic about their chances of defeat a chemical group of hardened assholes . ( Literally everyone in Rick ’s group has gone through all of this ; remember when Rick did n’t want to be their leader ? )
Ezekiel may be ready to abdicate his throne , but I imagine he ’s move to find out that even if he ’s lost his Panthera tigris he has n’t lose his obligation to his people . When Jerry say he need to call Ezekiel “ your loftiness , ” he ’s not really talking about how one has to address royal house ; he ’s talking about how needs Ezekiel to be “ your majesty”—to give Jerry and the biotic community a focal point full stop , a sense of identity , and a clear voice when the clip come in to act . I.e , a drawing card .
Again , none of this is specially subtle , and it ’s really just a short rehash of stuff Rick and his gang went through many , many season ago . But it figure out , partly because we ’re getting to see one of the show ’s most interesting unexampled characters put through the ringer , but also because Khary Payton just collar it . He does a phenomenal task as Ezekiel here , capturing his repulsion , his self - disgust , and his desolation at the end .
With “ Some Guy , ” we ’re halfway through the first lump of the time of year , and everything we ’ve seen so far has essentially shoot place over a unmarried Clarence Day , where Rick and allies have taken the scrap to Negan . I assume the Saviors will kick everyone ’s hind end pitilessly in the near time to come , but for now I ’m savor that our hombre seem to be making actual head in their war . It appears they ’ve basically wiped out two whole compounds , they have the magnanimous - piece of tail gunman , and they ’ve get hold of a clump of captive — but these victory have all come at a cost .
Assuming you do n’t look all the masses and menagerie animate being who were actually killed , the person who ’s paid the greatest cost is Ezekiel , and his extremely pyrrhic victory may have taken him off the table — and perchance the Kingdom , too . But I would n’t count out Ezekiel quite yet . When he decided to play the part his people need , it was n’t for a modified engagement . He may think his show is over , but rather it ’s just enter a novel act .

The installment begins with Ezekiel actually putting on his kingly armor and get his hair and poppycock ready , to really boom home the “ he ’s play a part ! ! ! ! ! ” aspect of it all . In lawsuit you were still a small indecipherable about what was happening here .
It always blows my mind a little when I see Khary Payton as Ezekiel and think back he ’s alsothe voice of Cyborg on Teen Titans andTeen Titans Go .
Alas , poor Shiva , you were simply rust too much of the VFX budget . Because really , otherwise you could have almost certainly bounded out of that circle of zombies to rubber , because you ’re a damn tiger .
opine the toxic waste dump has any significance other than a way to get some new , extra sodding zombies on screen ? I guess it does n’t .
