Facebook ’s at it again . While everybody have it away the company for its eponymic app , it also regularly dally around with found unexampled unity on the down - low . RememberLasso ? How aboutWhale , Bump , or Aux ? Well , the latest experimental app from Facebook is a Pinterest - same app called Hobbi .
The app bills itself as a variety of DIY - project manager . Its verbal description in theApp Storesays it ’s mean to “ help you document and call back the things you love to do , ” with a centering on cookery , baking , DIY , arts and craft , fitness , or home interior decoration . substance abuser can take photos of their undertaking to trail progress , and also organise them into album . There are a few second difference . Pinterest is more of a social connection in that you may friend and conform to hoi polloi and their dining table , spend a penny it soft to collaborate with others . ( Hence , why Pinterest reigns supreme when it comes to design weddings … ) Hobbi is more focused on solo , progress - trailing . So far there ’s not really a societal or explorative panorama to it , and you ca n’t search through other people ’s projects . you may create video highlight reels to share with others , but there ’s no literal way to shop for intake .
So far , it appears the app is only available for iOS . Gizmodo reach out to Facebook to see if there are any plan to add it to Android but did n’t immediately receive a response . The app is also the inspiration of Facebook ’s New Product Experimentation ( NPE ) Team . According toThe Information , which initially spotted the Hobbi app , the NPE squad is task with create Modern social help and lineament that can either go as standalone apps or get cannibalized into Facebook ’s existing platforms . Facebook also reportedly has no qualms about abruptly killing these experimental apps if they do n’t gain traction — belike a major reason why they do n’t get much fanfare . This also chase with Facebook ’s whole MO with regard to try new features in general . See : Recent news show that Facebook istesting a way to display chronological Instagram postson the sly .
It ’s also not surprising to see Facebook endeavor to see if it can clone what made Pinterest popular . After all , it did it to Snapchatwith Instagram Storiesto great success . ( It was less successful , however , with its scant - form video platform Lasso when taking on TikTok and Vine . ) It ’s also not the only platform trying to creep on Pinterest ’s sod . Google of late launchedTangi , which is a weird TikTok - Pinterest crossbreed for DIY videos .

After play around with Hobbi , I can say it ’s a clean , if derivative , app . It ’s concentrated to say whether Hobbi will adhere around for the long draw . Personally , I am not a DIY enthusiast and I already have too many apps that track my progress for various projects . So far , the app has a 2 - star valuation with about 30 review — most of which lambast the app for being a boring copycat . They have a point . The want of browsing meant I expend perhaps 10 minutes futzing around before close out . Unless you ’ve got a ton of projection kick the bucket , this is not an app that you ’d interact with daily . But who jazz ? Maybe this is the NPE Team app that finally sticks — then again , in all likelihood not .
