Eventually , subsequent updates through the zoo ( Puma , Panther , Tiger … ) not only rack up OS X into stable shape , but added a panoply of features — mundane ( the Mail software , DVD support ) aesthetic ( brush metallic element window ! bob reflection ! ) and some that essentially changed the room we crop and play with info — Dashboard , Expose , Spotlight — all made radical port designs mainstream .
But OS X is n’t just important for its crash to cream progress , but for what it lay out an insufferable - seeming decade ago . In 2001 , the Windows creation was bogged down in a morass of compatibility . Microsoft want to insure that , via the babiest of baby steps , users were n’t rocked too hard by the transition from one reading of Windows to another . Microsoft cosset its customer — from the crib of MS - DOS to the notorious ( -ly bad ) Windows ME ( Apple ’s O rivalry when X dropped ) . The Microsoft approach was n’t necessarily a faulty mode to make an operating system — in gradual , comfort tiptoe — but it sure was n’t an exciting one . The Start Menu . The Taskbar . Right - clicking . electrostatic landmarks of dragging and clicking that were the figure equivalent of worn - in armchair .
Apple did n’t give a damn about solace . OS X looked and felt dramatically new . This , as mentioned , convey along a horde of bug and worldwide unpleasantness .
