Annabelle : universe is the latest in the ever - uprise Conjuring universe , and it aims to severalise you everything you ever wanted to recognise about how that blame doll run from merely creepy-crawly to pure evil . This makes for mint of frights , and if the movie hits a few too many predictable note , at least it makes you shudder along the way .
Director David F. Sandberg made his cross with the unsettling fright - the - dark repugnance narrative Lights Out — he lead both the forgetful and its feature - distance expansion — so he ’s right in his wheelhouse here , run with a ghoul that does most of its dirty work in the dead of dark . The setting of Creation could n’t be more ideal for a horror film : a rambling former farmhouse in the centre of nowhere , overstuffed with creaky doorway , nooks and chap ( including a dumbwaiter ) , lights that flick at inopportune consequence , and multiple forbidden rooms . The property also contains a stale b full of things that would give Pumpkinhead nightmares and an previous well straight out of The Ring . Its occupants are Mr. and Mrs. Mullins ( Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto ) , a down in the mouth middle - senior duet still mourning the loss of their little girl 12 year prior and who are still feeling hangdog about turn to black magic as a make do mechanics . In other words — what a consummate place to knock down a group of spunky orphans . It ’s like Annie , except R - rated and with screams of brat instead of singing .
Even before the moving picture start , we know exactly what ’s endure to find , all of it emanating from our one-time pal Annabelle , who never talk but has one of movie theater ’s most shuddery thousand - cubic yard stare . It ’s a challenge , then , for Sandberg ( turn from a playscript by Gary Dauberman , who also wrote the first Annabelle movie and co - write upcoming invocation 2 spin - off The Nun ) to heighten the expected storey beats with stuff we are n’t expecting — or at least add an original spin to scares we ’ve seen before , like a monster lurking under the bottom . He succeeds for the most part , ratcheting up the apprehension along with the jumping , and he ’s help along by an effective youthful cast . The standouts are Lulu Wilson ( Ouija : Origin of Evil ) as Linda and Talitha Bateman as Janice , BFFs whose deep adhesion survives Jan ’s struggle with polio , but is badly screen when a demon enters the intermixture .
Most of Annabelle : Creation involves imperiling lilliputian daughter , which is a go - to for the Conjuring flick and for revulsion films in general , really , but it ’s particularly fondness - wrenching to see a grinning , long - clawed devil aim an innocent orphan in a wheelchair . ( “ I think it was a error land the girls here , ” a eccentric remarks at one item , way too belatedly in the movie for anything to be done about it . Yeah , ya think ? ) At least the kids in both Conjuring cinema had the demon - rupture Lorraine and Ed Warren to call upon for help ; there ’s nobody rushing to save Annabelle ’s victim , because quite obviously Annabelle has to retain her bad hoodoo so she can appear in all the films that take place after this one .
Speaking of all those other Conjuring films , the last scene of Creation very specifically explains how it ties to the first Annabelle motion picture , which makes sense , since you might be kind of left inquire otherwise . A far more thrust link is made when the orphans ’ shielder , a kind - hearted youthful nun act by Stephanie Sigman , shows Mr. Mullins a photo of her buddies from the convent , and … hello , who ’s this ? Our attending is specifically draw to a eldritch figure looming in the ground — quite plain Valak , the evil nun from Conjuring 2 and The Nun — and then remarked upon , just in slip the audience is too dull to notice .
At this point , it ’s hard not to watch any invocation - related movie without perpetually wondering which sinister part or cursed target will be getting its own standalone film next . Hey , if the Crooked Man from call forth 2 can get his own movie , my money ’s on either Creation ’s haunted record player or its exaggeratedly ghoulish bird-scarer . Keep setting these moving picture in old houses occupy by soppy collectors , and the press universe could , conceivably , spin out longer than the Friday the 13th and a Nightmare on Elm Street serial combine . And would that really be the bad thing that ever pass off to horror ? If the films themselves do n’t exactly introduce on the genre , at least they ’re well - made — and , so far at least , have been systematically flighty and entertaining .
