Just like our Sun will five billion years from now , KIC 05807616 ran out of H and expanded into a massive flushed behemoth , work mayhem on its solar system . The solution might just be the planetary equivalent of cubicle naval division .
Wefirst note the discoveryof planets KOI 55.01 and KOI 55.02 back in December . They are the first known exoplanets that are smaller than Earth , and their stance close to the dying KIC 05807616 means they were once really inside the outer plate of the red giant . The initial explanation for this was that these two star were remnants of gas giants that had had their outer layers burned away by their star ’s blast furnace , leave behind these tiny cores as essentially brand Modern planets .

But now there ’s another explanation to consider . As New Scientist report , it ’s conceivable these two human race were n’t the final result of a pair of flatulence giant burn aside . They might actually have number from the same accelerator pedal giant :
One planet , a gas giant about five time the mass of Jupiter , held on for dear life history . As the red giant steep it , it lost energy through friction , spiralling ever nigher to the star ’s dense , million - point center . If it could just give ear on until the star ’s out layers swept back over it as they collapse onto the whizz again , trip helium nuclear fusion , maybe it would make it . But it spiralled too close , and got pulled apart by the virtuoso ’s gravity , splitting into girl worlds in a cognitive operation reminiscent of cell division .
That ’s the explanation favor by Noam Soker and Ealeal Bear of the Israel Institute of Technology . So why do they argue for an unprecedented phenomenon as the most likely account for what ’s going on around KIC 05807616 ? The smoke gun , they say , is the synchronise nature of the two planets ’ orbits , which would be unmanageable to explain as the backwash of two separate planets being chaotically ripped apart inside a red giant . What ’s more , this massive giant star ’s destruction and splitting would have caused the superstar ’s gaseous state to evaporate and reduce the size of it of the red giant , which neatly excuse the diminish sized of KIC 05807616 .
