Social media users will remember the “The Dress” becoming an online phenomenon in 2015 after a photo of the garment, which was initially posted on Tumblr, had viewers split on it being blue and black or white and gold.
A video offering a scientific explanation of the viral dress put the phenomenon down to “color constancy,” where differences in lighting andwhite-balancecause the brain to automatically fill in information.
“We don’t see the world objectively as is, we see the world through the lens of our preconceptions, cultural operating systems…reality is coupled to perception, so change perception, you change reality,” Silva continued. “Whatever situation people were in when they saw the picture of that dress, it changed their perception of the dress.”
