A pediatrician and mother of 2 was stabbed to death Saturday afternoon while sitting at a picnic table outside of her Texas apartment.
The family of Talat Jehan Khan toldKHOUthat she went outside of her Conroe, Texas apartment to relax when a man stabbed her a number of times.
During his preliminary court appearance Sunday, the suspect’s bond was set to $500,000. A district court date has not yet been set in the case.

Khan was at Alys Apartments on Mansions View Dr. when the stabbing happened, KHOU noted, citing police. A witness told the outlet that a man “came out of nowhere” and that she had heard a woman “screaming.”
“Witnesses on scene gave a good description of the suspect and his direction of travel,” police said in a statement to the outlet. “Officers quickly set up a perimeter and were able to locate and detain the suspect a short distance away on Johnson-Martin Rd.”
Khan’s family described the pediatrician — who recently moved to Texas from Seattle — as “extremely loving, kind” and “the best aunt.”
“This is an immeasurable loss for our family, completely unexpected,” Khan’s niece Mahnoor Mangrio told KHOU. “She’s a Muslim, strong in her faith, those are identifiable traits about her.”
“She wanted to go somewhere it was sunny. She moved out here and she liked it, liked the sun and the warm weather,” Khan’s brother Wajahat Nyaz added.
Family members toldABC13that Khan moved to the apartment complex with her 14-year-old daughter. She had been working at Texas Children’s Pediatrics Conroe at the time of her death.
Neighbor Matthew Amador said that he ran after the suspect with a Katana sword after he realized what happened, and the man had an “evil look” in his eyes, per ABC13.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations Houston chapter later shared its “sincerest condolences to the children and family” of the victim on Facebook following the news of Khan’s death.
“While the police have not released a motive for the killing we want to assure everyone that we are in conversation with law enforcement agencies,” the CAIR chapter added. “We are unsure at this moment if this was a hate crime, however, given the tragic circumstances, we are paying very close attention to the investigation.”
Neighbors called Khan’s stabbing a “senseless murder,” and Khan’s brother added that it “shouldn’t go unpunished.”
“It’s bad for the community,” Nyaz said. “It’s bad for the entire country, so we want your support to get justice for her.”
