The incident began around 12:45 a.m. local time on Saturday on I-75 South near the Delk Road exit when the driver of a Kia Sedona lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons, according to the Marietta Police Department.
While the multi-vehicle crash was happening, a black Dodge Challenger traveling in the far right lane lost control and struck two pedestrians who had pulled over on the right shoulder to “report the initial crash and render aid,” police said.
Police said the pedestrians were transported to a local hospital. One passenger was transported with serious injuries, while the other pedestrian — identified as 38-year-old Sarah Bolt of Monroe, Georgia — did not survive.
The driver of the Kia Sedona was treated at the scene and released with minor injuries, according to police, who noted that the Dodge Challenger driver had no injuries and was released.
A police spokesperson told PEOPLE on Wednesday that the department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Unit has completed the vehicle examinations and initial interviews, with more interviews and a “mountain of evidence to review” before deciding on charges or citations.
“Whatever she was doing, she was always looking out for other people, not herself,” he said.
In afundraiser, the 38-year-old was described as someone who “always stood up for what she believed to be right and true.”
“This life will not be easy without Sarah’s influence and friendly countenance, but we hold the knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ close to our hearts and look forward to the day when we will be reunited with her again,” the fundraiser read, which raised over $12,000 as of Thursday morning.

“We just think that if anybody can find it in their heart to reach out and support that the family and those children, making a contribution that would help their future would be a wonderful and selfless thing,” Rob told the outlet.
“She was just so wonderful,” he added. “She’s in so many ways the bright star of the family.”
