The books will be published this summer , and will hit classrooms this fall .

Munroe is a former NASA roboticist . In 2005 , he startedXKCD , a “ webcomic of Romance language , satire , math , and language . ” The comic depicts whimsical joystick figures , who apply regular spoken communication and jokes to discuss esoteric skill . In recent years , Munroe published two related Koran , What If ? : Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions(2014 ) andThing Explainer : Complicated Stuff in Simple Words(2015 ) . LikeXKCD , both works explore complex academic subjects using basic Good Book and film . Thing Explainer , in picky , tackled topics like architectonic shell and atomic bombs using the 1000 most common Word in the English words .

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt ’s   textbook editor run across varlet proofs ofThing Explainer , accord to theTimes . They   thought its drawings would make fun — and educational — addition to 2017 editions ofHMH Chemistry , HMH Biology , andHMH Physics , The Verge writes .
